Cassie had a relatively normal childhood; she was born in England to parents who were neither incredibly rich nor entirely poor. They were a ‘well off’ family and Cass never went without the things she needed to be given a happy, healthy childhood.
In school she was a little above average academically but she wasn’t exactly the most social of girls. She had her few close friends but she tended to shy away from the limelight in school, became one of those girls no one really knew and would never really be remembered. Apart from maybe the very few friends she had. And Cassie liked it that way. She was in no way a shy girl, no, far from it but she often just felt like she was on a different wavelength as her peers. Cassie Bishop just enjoyed sitting a room by herself, losing herself to painting using brilliant acrylics upon a pale canvas as she listened to music through her earphones. It was her way of just forgetting the world for a couple of hours and having time to herself.
Even as a young teen she felt as if everyone was so caught up in petty dramas, getting ‘wasted’ and bragging about the fact that they ‘were so drunk they couldn’t even remember being sick on their favourite shoes’. They called it ‘living life to the fullest’ but, she seemed to fail to see what part of that was ‘living life to the fullest’.
Cass wanted to live life to the fullest; god knows that she did but her idea of living life to the fullest? Travelling. Making a difference in the world one way or another. Living for excitement, yes, but doing it without being stupid.
She often kept her ambitions to herself though, never really feeling strongly connected to anyone to feel like she could just expose and open up herself to them.
At the age of fourteen something happened that would change the course of her life forever. It was something that could’ve been so insignificant just happened to plant the beginnings of something new. That was, when she met Niall Hayes.
Niall Hayes was a new student from Ireland that had started at the beginning of the school year. He was two years older than Cassie and their meeting was completely by chance- or fate, depending on what kind of person you are. It was the briefest, most fleeting moment when a busy Cassie in a rush bumped into the distracted Niall. Flustered and blushing lightly at the slight embarrassment she felt, she apologized with the smallest of smiles and he, taken momentarily off guard by the young girl with long blonde hair, told her it was fine and apologized also with another, small smile.
Then they went on their separate ways.
Occasionally, they both saw each other in the hallways of the school and young Cassie did develop sweet schoolgirl crush on the boy, but other than that, they didn’t really interact all that much again for a good two years.
It was a rainy day, the rain was absolutely slinging it down but sixteen year old Cassie had stayed behind in school for a little over an hour, stuck in her own little world painting at the back of the art room as The Kinks played in the background.
The downpour still pretty consistent even after she put her canvas to the side to dry, clean her palette, brush and water pot and tidied up the mess she had made and exited the art room. She was wearing an old tatty shirt of her dad’s which was extremely oversized, looked baggy and had paint splattered over it, her hair was pulled up into a messy ponytail and unknown to her, also had a touch of blue acrylic. To her, she looked a complete mess, but she didn’t care. She was in an elated mood.
With her backpack across her shoulder and a smile on her face, she rounded the corner of the school hallway only to bump straight into another, much taller person and low and behold, when she looked up she saw it was none other than Niall Hayes.
She laughed this time, finding it amusing that they just happened to bump into each other again and he smiled at her before introducing himself. She in turn also introduced herself just before Niall pointed out the alien colour hair, saying how he wasn’t sure if it was a new fashion statement that’d trend, but it suited her and she laughed again.
They exited the school together and it was still raining, Cassie didn’t have much to cover herself apart from stick her bag above her head as she dashed across the school grounds with Niall and across and over to her bus stop.
The two teens stood there for a while, talking and as she shivered, he took off his leather jacket and put it around her something small but brought a smile to her face. They spoke until she missed her bus and had to wait for the next one and they spoke until that one arrived and she got on it to go home, completely forgetting the jacket she wore that belonged to the boy.
Of course, this wasn’t the end this time. Oh no. From that day onward after giving him his jacket back Cassie and Niall spoke more often and it wasn’t long before it seemed they were dating. They seemed to just click together so quickly and easily and Cassie told him and opened up to him about small things that she had never told anyone else before. She didn’t really press him for more information about himself, not wanting to annoy him by prying but as months turned into a year which turned into two she grew increasingly curious. Especially by his strange behaviour when he started to ‘have to leave’ earlier than usual or had to cancel or was ‘sick’ more often that he was before…it was strange to her and she was still only young so her mind did think the worst; he didn’t like her anymore. It was going to end and the idea hurt, of course it did. She was infatuated. No, she was in love with him.
One night, at the age of nineteen, she was walking home by herself through the park and had just texted Niall telling him that she felt like they needed to talk soon. She was going to talk him about the thoughts that had been playing on her mind. Cass told him she was walking through the park and she’d meet them at their bus stop. It was eerily quiet, the kind of quite where you felt like maybe you weren’t quite as alone as you thought you were. In this case, Cassie’s instincts were correct. She was attacked from behind and forced against a tree and she screamed, oh god, she was terrified but her screams were muffled out by a hand over her mouth. The man who had her pinned there was unnaturally beautiful she remembered thinking. Like a humanized pre-Raphaelite marble statue. Only, his beauty was distorted by a dark, hungry look in his eyes that chilled her to the bone. Then as he opened his mouth, she saw them. Those elongated fangs. She tried screaming louder, struggling and she kept on telling herself how this couldn’t be real. He couldn’t be a vampire. Vampires weren’t real. They were fictional.
But then, the vampire sank his fangs into her neck and she felt long, painful pulls there. Cassie felt like that was it. She was going to die.
She didn’t know. Before she knew it, the creature abruptly stopped. She was disorientated from blood loss but she was very aware of two things; one; someone was fighting the creature of fiction and two; that person was Niall.
Cassie’s mind faded to black then and when she finally awoken from the deep darkness she was in hospital bed and Niall was asleep gently holding her hand beside her which warmed her until the memories came back to her. Which brought up a lot of questions in her mind.
Over the following days, all her answers were answered without hesitation by Niall. He told her of the supernatural world around them. Of Vampires, Lycans, Angels and Demons. Some of the things he told her genuinely scared her and sent shivers up her spine but the thing that scared her the most? Was him telling her what he was. He was human, but something called a ‘hunter’. Niall was born into a family of skilled hunters, although, his parents had died when he was a young boy but he currently worked with a couple of others as a group. He hunted down these creatures and killed them. Of course, this scared her and made her see him slightly differently but what it didn’t change? Was the fact she loved him and he too, told her he loved her and that he had been scared himself for the first time in a very long time.
He was willing to step away from his life as a hunter for her.
But, she was stupid.
Instead, she told him that she had never felt so helpless in her entire life, never felt so weak and petty. Instead, she told him she wanted him to teach her so she’d never feel that way again. She wanted to be able to fight for herself if such a thing ever happened again.
And so, he did.
He taught her about each race, strengths, weaknesses and origins and simple self-defence training against the supernatural. She was a quick learner and as her hunger to learn more grew the training became more and more advanced.
Cassie stopped painting as much and like Niall, her life soon became all about the supernatural. Every day she’d make sure she learned something new. Neither of them intended it, but Cassie soon accompanied Niall on his hunts. Cassie soon became a hunter herself.
By the time she was twenty one and he was twenty three, they had become well-known in England as a pretty badass pair of hunters that would great fighters alone but incredible working together. They made quite a name for themselves. Bishop and Hayes. And this new level to their relationship brought them so much closer and strengthened their love.
So much so that at twenty one and twenty three they married. It was a small ceremony but it was something that they both seemed to want despite their hectic, crazy lives and Cassie had never been so happy than she was that day.
Life was going great, they were both at their peaks, they loved each other, they were happy.
Then it was all ruined.
It was all ruined when Niall had come across something seemed to only be a lone Lycan, which he could’ve handled and it was going to be a standard kill. Not easy, it was never easy but he would’ve been able to handle it. But, then, it turned out the Lycan was not alone. When he had one cornered at a dead end, another came up behind him and together the two Lycans ripped him to shreds then left him there.
Cassie, arrived ten minutes after and her heart broke when she saw him. She cried, cried her heart out as she held him in her arms. He was still breathing, but he was as good as dead and as she looked at him in the eyes, she saw that look. He loved her, but that look. Niall wanted it to end.
She hesitated, of course she did and she sobbed and kissed him, before getting up and putting him out of his pain with a single bullet to the head.
Her legs gave out again though, and she sat on the ground and cried until the sun came up.
Now, she is hardened. What happened hardened her and she’s determined to rid the world of Lycans, vampires too, but mostly Lycans. Yes, she’s out for revenge not just against those who killed her husband but the whole race.
