PERSONALITY
Azriel is a hardened, reserved sort of fella. He doesn’t warm up to most people, well, ever, but he’s been known to have a soft spot for children. Being the archangel of destruction can wear on a guy after centuries and centuries of death and damage, after all. Azriel gets no enjoyment from his work, he takes no pleasure in causing havoc on Earth, and it is for this reason that he’s held his position for so long. In the beginning, he loved the mortals as his Father had commanded, and causing them pain hurt him in a way that most could never begin to fathom. After many years, his heart began to harden, and he started to shut out his love for humanity. Recently, he’s begun to feel a sort of contempt for humans, and a jealousy, even, because they live simple, short lives, and have no cosmic duties or responsibilities.
But even with his contempt and hardened heart, Azriel—when walking among the humans, at least—is nothing short of a gentleman. He’s got sort of a Southern charm thing going, very much a ‘yes ma’am, no ma’am’ kinda guy, and he’s the first to help a stranger in need. As much as his heart wars against his duties, and much as he’d like to take pleasure in his work, he still loves humanity to his very most core. All-in-all, Azriel isn’t the kind of guy who you’d want to mess with—he’ll stand up to bullies and wrong-doers—it wouldn’t be a very good idea to get on the angel’s bad side.
HISTORY
What’s there to say about an Archangel’s history? Azriel has been around since the dawn of time. He’s seen the birth of man in the Garden of Eden and watched humanity fall far, far down the rabbit’s hole on more than one occasion. It was Azriel that brought on the Great Flood at his Father’s behest, and it was Azriel who wept when he was commanded to make Mount Vesuvius decimate Pompeii. If you can name a major natural disaster, there’s a pretty damn good chance that Azriel was behind it. Though natural disasters have given him the most notoriety in Heaven, they aren’t the only missions of destruction the angel has been sent on. More times than he’d ever willingly admit, Azriel has been sent to pit man against man, brother against brother, and each time he’s been heartbroken at how readily humanity will slaughter itself for the sake of a “greater good.” Whether it be in the name of God or the name of equality, or even a complete lack of an agenda at all, Azriel has had to sit back and watch the humans he loves tear each other into pieces.
In the last several decades, Azriel has become more and more reluctant to carry out his duties, and has been having serious notions of rebelling against his purpose. His heart breaks daily, because he was created to destroy what his Father has commanded him to love, and the hypocrisy of his very existence is starting to wear him down. Constantly, he thinks about falling, about losing his grace and never taking another order for the rest of his life. But the moment the command came down that Azriel was to take a ‘break’ from his duties, the angel was at first bewildered, and then angry—did God think to give some lesser angel his responsibilities?
After a long talk with God, however, (and maybe a little talking-down from Michael—who can say no to their big brother?) Azriel decided that a break would beneficial to him. So the angel became male in form and took to the Earth, advised to ’deal’ with any demon or supernatural he was might happen to encounter.
